Foot & Ankle Surgery

Dr. David Cain was born and raised in Winterset, IA. He attended Central College where he majored in Biology and was an active member of the football team as a defensive end.

Dr. Cain earned his Doctorate of Podiatric Medicine (DPM) and Masters in Anatomy (MS-Anatomy) degrees at Des Moines University. He then went on to complete his rigorous foot and ankle surgical residency at Columbia St. Mary’s in Milwaukee, a level two trauma center and regional burn center. His comprehensive training included all aspects of foot and ankle care and focused on reconstruction of the foot and ankle as well as trauma and sports injuries.

Dr. Cain is double board certified by the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS) and American Board of Podiatric Medicine (ABPM). He also maintains a sports medicine qualification.

While he is trained extensively in non-surgical and surgical treatments of all foot and ankle ailments, Dr. Cain has an interest in treating patients with sports and ankle injuries. He is one of the few surgeons in Iowa with formal training and only surgeon in Ames performing total ankle replacements. He has extensive experience in ankle scopes and lateral ankle ligament repair. He actively takes call at Mary Greeley Medical Center, performing a myriad of procedures from amputations to complex ankle fractures. Dr. Cain was featured in Mary Greeley Medical Center’s Health Connect magazine as the first provider to ever perform a total ankle replacement in Story County (Full Metal Ankle).

Dr. Cain is rooted in Iowa as his wife is from Manson, IA. He spends his free time with his wife and two young daughters and is actively involved with the family farm back in Winterset.
